Early initiation to cigarettes, alcohol and drugs among Innu préadolescents of Quebec.

This study (1) describes the nature, frequency and age of initiation of alcohol and drugss use among 161 boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 years residing in eight Quebec Innu communities, and (2) establishes a substances user profiles. The results indicate that 71.2% of preadolescents had initiated the use of at least one drug and that 31.2% were at-risk users. The results support a harm reduction approach aimed at avoiding or at least delaying the onset of alcohol and drugs use among these youth and underscore the need for intervention tailored to the severity of their consumption.
