Abstract

This study aimed to examine the impact of an emotional competence (EC) course among alexithymic students (N=10) enrolled in teacher training. The results show that the students with high alexithymia (N=10) achieved significantly lower marks in all educational activities on the five ECs set forth by Mikolajczak, Quoidbach, Kotsou & Nélis (2014) compared to their non-alexithymic peers (N=10). The results also reveal significant negative correlations between the DIE subscale (difficulty in identifying emotions) on the TAS-20 and two of the five ECs of Mikolajczak et al. (2014). Finally, the results indicate a significant negative correlation between the DIE subscale and the global interpersonal score achieved on reflective practice sheets. Subsequent studies using a broader sample, as well as a more precise measurement of ECs and a better pedagogical conception of this type of course, would be required.
